monti vs chalice

So I started my tank only interested in softies and some lps like duncans and frogspawns. But now that ive got my tank going i really started to like all lps and sps so i started doing some research. My question is when i go to my lfs and others nearby i can never tell if im looking at a chalice or a monti frag. Whats the best way to tell the difference in your guys opinion because a lot of the time the montis are laying on the rock so i cant tell that its a plate.

Montis (caps) are paper thin and have a small-bumpy texture. Chalices also grow flat, but are much thicker than monti caps. They have a bumpy surface, but the bumps are more or less arranged in a line.
Chalice also have more crazy color patterns than a cap would.

also, encrusting monti frags will have visible polyps, like other sps.
