They are just low volatge Spot L.E.D.'s. Kind of like a nightlight. Noramlly blue in color but can ge other colors. They do not emit enough light to do anything other then light up your tank at night.

Moonlights don't affect your tank in any negative way. They just similate the moon when it's dark and your tank lights are out. It's a little more natural than total darkness.

Mostly asthetics, they do look pretty cool, but do nothing beneficial for your tank. Well maybe to help you see into it in the dark.

Moon ligts are normally blue but I have seen different colors. It doesn't really matter I guess. And yes they are LED's which is good cuz no signifigant heat produces and very low volatge consumed.

Say for instance you don't have moon lights and you have to switch the lights off at night would the sudden change from light to dark scare the fish?

No can't say that I have ever heard of sudden darkness scaring them to much. I know they don't like it whn I turn the mag light on at about 2 in the morning though

I have 4 blue and 4 white moon lights on my Current MH fixture. They do make the tank look really nice at night. I've heard that it is more natural for the fish to have some faint light at night as they would with the starry sky and moon on the ocean. However, they are fine in darkness (as on overcast nights). It's really more of an aesthetic thing for your own personal enjoyment.
