It's been reported that they die of a broken heart being separated from their mate when caught. However, leaving the shakespeare love story behind, it seems more realistic that they are a schooling fish and that is another reason they do not do well in captivity.
I have the simple answer to this then. Everyone that wants one just buy 50 instead of just 1... then they will be happier and their chances of surviving are much greater Or at least if one dies you got 49 more chances to go!
