More ? about high KH

What are the problems with a high dKH? I have a 6 year old 75 gallon reef tank (aquired about a year ago) and all the other parameters seem good but my Alkalinity always test very high (but the test I have doesn't give number...just low/normal/high range). Ammonia, Nitrites,Nitrates all 0, temp. 78 degrees, pH 8.1 and Calcium 450 (whatever its measured in). Everything in the tank seems to do well except snails don't seem to last long. Could the alkalinity be the problem? I do use well water to add to the tank. I am worried that changing things might cause more problems than leaving it alone. Any recommendations? I'd rather not use R/O water unless the alk is really a problem. Are there other safe ways to lower it and should I try? Thanks.
