i have a 55 gal fish tank that has been setup for 4 months. I have a powder brown tang that is about 5 inches long, a kole tang that is about 6 inches long, a flame angel thats 2 and a half inches long, and 4 damselfish that are an inch each. Also, the water is goood. Is this too many fish? Can i add more and what size? What if i get rid of the damselfish?

I'd same you've got a lot of fish in that tank. I defintely wouldn't put ANYTHING more in there.... You prollly need to take something out. TJ

I agree with tj you need to take the damsels out. I would not add any more fish, you will be asking for problems. Good Luck

thanks for the advice, but i thought that you could have up to 20 or so inches of fish in a 55 gal tank. With the two tangs and the angel fish are only 13 and a half inches and i know that the powder brown will get bigger. Everryone is getting along with eachother. Anyone heard of having 20 inches of fish in a 55 gal?

Water quality isn't the only thing to consider when stocking a tank. You need to consider the fishes territorial needs. 20" of fish in a 55 gallon is too much. General rule of thumb for saltwater is 1" for every 5 gallons. Not what you wanted to hear, is it? Your tangs are going to outgrow your available space real soon.

yeah thats too many fish in there. take the powder brown back to the lfs they can give you credit or somethin. also i would take the damsels out, they can become a big pain. the kole tang and a flame angel will be fine in there. if you get rid of those fish, you could look into other fish like clowns, gobies, wrasses, grammas, etc. bo

I don't think you have to much to worry about. I have a 55 gallon that has 1 med. naso tang (Big Boy) I just love him, 1 yellow tang (Guber), 1 foxface fish (Foxy Roxy), 3 bubbletip anemones, 1 small tomatoe clown, 1 large tomatoe clown, 1 spotted hawk fish (Hawk), and 2 fire fish that do nothing but hide in the cave (woody and boner), and 20 pounds of live rock. I have had this for sometime now at least a year. Although funny you posted about damsel fish today, because today I took out my 2 jewels, 2 devil blues, and 2 black neon velvets, that were just a pain to my other fish. I have an excellent store here in town where they have been owned and operated for over 4o years. They told me today never to get damsles that they will become unwanted. If you would like some small fish I suggest something small like a tomatoe and anemone, you would just love this combo in your tank.

lovemytangs, not trying to cause any trouble, but your tank is way overstocked. your tank is gonna crash, and crash hard one day in the near future. you need to get rid of some of those fish esp. the naso which will get huge and doesnt even have nearly enough room in a 55. at least you took out the 6 damsels, that did a little help. again im not trying to put you down or anything, im just trying to help you out and warn you that you need to do something with your tank before the whole system crashes. bo
