I just bought a 65G with a overflow system with pre-drilled holes for a sump. When connecting my overflow pipes some are threaded and some are smoothe. I am going to use plumbers tape on the thread to reduce leaks, but I don't know if I should use plumber glue to hold the smoothe pipes together and reduce leaks.

I am uncomfortable using permanent glue on stuff. If for a reason I want to change it up, I hate to be committed to an inflexible relationship!
I would use flexible tubing a bit too small. I would heat the end with boiling from the microwave water, then slide it on where it goes. As the tubing cools, it holds pretty tight, but I add a cable tie just to be sure. I have a tie tightener that is a cool tool from Home Depot.
But, it does depend on the connection. If you are sure you will never have to remove it, glue away!
