I would love to have more than one bangaii in my tank - bit I am so confused. Can I do it or not? And under what circumstances, if I can.

yes you can have more than one, as long as you have space. If you have a 30 gal or bigger tank you can polly keep two, however an established male banggais will drive off and eventually kill a submissive new male. Now male/females pairs do great.
Unfortunately you can' --- thee fish, so its a crap shoot

I'd be putting them in a new 150 gallon. The only other fish that will be there are two clowns that have been around for about a year.
I had thought to put the cardinals in my 10 gallon QT right now while my 150 cycles, but perhaps I'll wait on them and use my 30 for a QT after I move everything over.
The rest of my livestock died a few weeks ago (my skimmer died while I was on vacation, the clowns are the only thing that made it through) so I'm dying for some new fish and everything else that I plan is too big to put in my 30 gallon while I wait for the 150 to cycle.
Guess I'll practice patience again.

there is a way where you can tell the --- difference...it was posted in a thread started by someone else i guess you would have to wait until the male has mated and the jaw stretches out.
But if you were to see 2 banggais hanging out together in a tank get those because most likely they are a mated pair.

viet- they only sure fire way to tell a male banggai from a female is when the male is holding eggs.
no thread regardless of magic will tell you there is a way to --- these fish-there isn't. Believe I have set forth about 5 or 6 methods myself and none of them have held true.
sexing banggais is a 50/50 gamble

Klongo, You do have to find a pair that have already paired up. A LFS near you should help you out. The LFS near me got me a pair by just waiting until they came in, waited a week or so to see them mate up, called me and that was that. They had many babies and the babies would go through the out take pipes into the bottom tank and I would raise the ones that would survive their ordeal, 5-6 months later, sell the babies back to the LFS. They survived nicely in the sub-tank.
The male does carry the babies. Very interesting. They do eat peppermint shrimp, so if you ever have a problem with aptasia, you will need the shrimp. In a tank your size and plenty of hiding places, the shrimp would survive long enough to eat off the aptasia. I have the shrimp just for enjoyment now since all the aptasia are gone but for years had to keep buying shrimp and realized it was the Bengaii's. My LFS suggested that was what was happening and indeed they are night hunters and they were capturing the shrimp. But, they are very enjoyable and different. Good luck.
