Movies that are "based on true events"??

I really tend to like movies that have a basis in reality and are not entirely fiction. Recently the wife and I saw The Strangers, which was pretty good for a horror flick. I was just wondering if there is any way for me to find out which portions of the movie are the true events, and which were created. Anyone know?

That was the movie coming to mind as I read the title. In actuality, in that case, Police probably just found the scene of the dead couple, possibly the friend, but my guess is, that's probably about it. I mean, I don't see the car fire and some of the other dramatics as even coming close.

wikipedia says this about the inspiration - it also gave a complete and thorough spoiletr for the whole movie

[edit] Inspiration
According to production notes,[2] the film was inspired by an event from director Bryan Bertino's childhood: a stranger came to his home asking for someone who was not there, and Bertino later found out that empty homes in the neighborhood had been broken into that night.[3] In interviews, Bertino stated he was "very impressed" with some of the theories circulating on the Internet about the "true events" the movie is allegedly based on, but said his main inspiration was Helter Skelter, a true crime book about the 1969 Manson family murders.[4][5]
In another interview, Liv Tyler revealed that in Bertino's original script, "You saw a lot more of the strangers. It was much more of a Manson-esque experience."[3]

His inspiration came from a childhood experience, but supposedly this is the actual case that the event came from.
That's wild. You can tell that the story has a Manson-esque feel to it with the co-ed killers.
Pretty good movie if anyone hasn't seen it.

When it came out, I had carried my 13 yr. old up to the movies to meet his girlfriend and her Dad (now this guy is about 6'2" 280lbs). Well, tired of spying on teenagers, I convince him to let them watch their own friggin' movie, and I talked him into The Strangers. It was just out, so neither of us had a clue, it was just a random selection based on the choices. I thought it was great, but I'm into those kind of movies, but......this pansy, was like an 8 yr old girl, closing his eyes and staying a little "too" close to my chair. It was funny in one sense, but I knew what everyone else in the theater was thinking...
