in about three weeks I will have to move my 55 gallon set-up to another apartement. I have a wet/dry filtration system. The only fish currently in the tank is a medium lion fish. What is the best way of going about moving my tank to create the least amount of bacterial loss.

I suppose your tank is pretty heavy. When your new location is perfectly ready I would empty your tank water into 5 gal buckets, I am assuming these to be clean and (fish ok), Put any live rock etc into them, when enough weight is removed and your tank can be moved without racking it move it first, immediately pour back the 5 gal buckets, etc. Try not to loose to much heat or slosh. Good Luck! I guess you know water it 8.33 pounds per gal.

i have moved my old 55 many times the longest being about 400 miles. i took all of the water out except enough to keep the bottom cc/sand covered. i went to the local fish store and got the largest fish bags they had and double bagged them. put them in a cooler. i never took any large amount of water with me but i guess you could use a trash can for the water if you wanted to. i kept all of my canister filters wet. you would need to keep the bio balls in your wet dry wet for the trip. when i got the tank set up at the new place i entroduced the fish back to the tank like i had just bought them. slowly. i never lost a fish. good luck it will try your nerves.

Well i didn't move my 55 gallon far (across to the other side of the living room, about 25 foot) i took the fish out, but them in ziploc bags...with water of course...this cause less stress than if u were to leave it in the tank while moving...took most of the water out and put it into one of those big 50 gallon plastic containers... and took live rock out put in in with the container water and moved it...Confusing??
