When the sand settles the water will clear..turn off the power heads and pumps for now. After it settles restart them.
I find leaving pumps and filtration on settles a tank quicker than without. also if the pumps are off stuff will settle where it wouldnt with them on so when you restart them it's just kick up stuff again.

+1, i found this out the hard way,when i started my first tank.It may take longer,but you'll only have to do it once,not twice.
you could try adding a Hang on Back filter with a standard cartridge on it for a few days just to catch the free floating particles that wont settle and then remove it.
It worked wonders for me when i first started my tank.
