Mushroom fragging?

OK i think i got the nerv to slice my mushroom and see what happens. From what i was reading i take the mushroom out and slice the head down the center and then cut it right at the base of the rock. Then i put it in a container with rubble and netting over the top until it reattaches? How much time do you have to keep the mushroom out of water?
