is it true that mushrooms and polyps will take over the tank in time due to their fast growth rate would a fowlr plus a lot of mushrooms and about 3 fish turn out to be a solid tank over time? see what i already have down below.
It sounds to me like a great idea, any downfalls
this is with minimal lighting

My tank has been up for over 2 years now....
My first corals were: a rock with 5 'shrooms, a colony of yellow polyps, and a small colony of button polyps.
The mushrooms have grown to over 40 and I regularly harvest them in trade for credit at the lfs. ( I take 3 a month). I didn't start this till last month. They haven't taken over, they just spread from a rock 2 " across to about a 6" circle. They are really crammed in there. When they "let go" and float around I let them settle on the gravel for a day or two, get a good footing and scoop that bit up and head to the store.
My yellow polyps tend to spread more. Went from 3" line to about 5" circle with 3 small colonys in other parts of tank.... it looks like golden grass flowing in the current. No regrets. I take the small colonies in for credit as well.
The buttons are slower. They have spread from 1" circle to 3" circle and are very dense. I split off a piece of colony for experiment and trans planted 4 polyps on a rock... its been 7 months and I have 5 happy polyps.
If you want a weed. Buy xenia. Speads like weed and if you don't have an urchin munching it you can harvest it almost weekly.
Sorry for the ramble... its late. Good luck.

I bought a rock with 3 green-striped mushrooms on it 2 weeks ago. It's sitting under one 400 watt halide (will be 2 400watters once the second bulb arrives) . Anyway...in 2 weeks I've got 8 mushrooms on the rock now. the 3 original...and 4 new ones growing out.
Also, I got a rock with two purple mushrooms on it about a week ago...a third mushroom has begun to grow already.
These are all placed on the very bottom of the tank. I'm going to experiment with the green striped at the very top when the second bulb arrives. Hopefully they will multiply quickly!

I started with 5 mushrooms about 8 months ago. There are just as many on the back side of the rock. Maybe 25 total

There was an article in AFM this month about shroom taking over- there is a pic of a colony that killed a galaxea coral- which would be considered an agressive coral- so it is a good idea to trim your Discosoma shrooms

i have seen them kill a brain before- but i would have thought a galaxy coral could fight them off- but i guess not- it also shows burns on a Montipora from Discosoma shrooms

any suggestions on "cutting them back" kickster. i had a ricordea that fell from its spot and stung the hell out of a cup coral frag. i was really surprised at this. the shroom died, andthe cup coral was damaged but healed back up and is now fine!
good luck

yep- just cut off the shrooms(at the base) that are invading otherplaces- either make frags, give them to somebody or throw them away:)

my shrooms look like Finlands. I don't do anything special to them to make em split. My lights are low by some standards... I have 2 40 w 50/50, 2 40 w 10k and 2 40w actinics. My hood is rapped in reflective mylar.
I direct feed my shrooms 1 a week frozen mysid or silversides, add Marine snow 1-2 week, Black powder 1 week, spectra vital 1 week.
Shrooms are 1/2 way up tank.
I have 3 that have split off and are in caves. I can't "pull" them away and they are multiplying as well... so much for needing light!
Shrooms are covered with a mucus (they feelslimy) I think thats what helps protect them from other coral's stingers. They smother other corals pretty quickly... I'm always on watch.

do you put any minerals in the H20 or just light and silversides?

they can grow back at the base, yes, but you need top make sure after that almost no tissue remains on the rock

I add iodide, but other than that, just regular water changes. These things seem to do better than most with out any help. Just food, water, and room.
Good luck.
