mushrooms

I have had mushrooms in my tank for a couple of months and have been doing fine but recently they have not been opening up all of the way, what could cause this? what do you think of using an airpump with airstone in saltwater tank?

Ususally mushrooms will only close up when feeding or when bothered by something. It could be a world of things... Hermits walking across them, poor water quality, another coral stinging it - it would be better if you posted a picture but you could start by giving a little more detail on your tank...
Why would you want an airstone in your tank? I dont recommend using them...

i have recently added quite a few hermit crabs and i think this may be the problem because i have noticed them very close my mushrooms and on them occasionally. I will try to get some pics of my tank soon even though i do not have a lot of corals or inverts yet.

If you ever have a problem with your tank, clear pictures of the problem will get you solid answers 10 times faster than trying to describe the issue. Without any other information I would say they are probably just getting irritated by the hermits...

Assuming you have an open sump and your tank is not tightly covered you have no need of an air stone you will have sufficient oxygen and gas exchange
