I saw an ad on Craigs List for a 55gal tank with stand, overflow box, water pump, sealife systems sump tank, heater, and various plumbing for $100. I couldn't pass it up. He just wanted to get rid of the tank, so I had to get it.

cleaning the tank.

tomorrow I will be cleaning the streaks off

Sealife Systems Sump

Sand - hopefully 40lbs will be enough, if not will buy more

Powerhead that they guy gave me for free..will be upgrading before i add fish. I may need to reseal some spots also...

Overflow box..will probably be upgrading also

That's it for now...

I forgot my "shopping list" so to speak. I will be slowly buying this stuff over the next few weeks. I just bought 2 Koralia 600 gph powerheads off of amazon. Should be enough for now i would think. As for lights...I am going with the WavePoint HO T5 216 watt (4x54w). I dont think i want MH. I will probably change my mind down the road.
A friend of mine gave me his skimmer, not so great. I will be buying a new one. Don't know what brand. any suggestions are def welcome.

How'd the leak test go?
I just got all the water in. nothing leaking so far. I wanted to test the sump tank and the overflow box. everything is working great.

I am going to let it sit for 24 hours or so. Just to be positive

Hey did you ever get those streaks to come off the glass??
no i didnt get the streaks off, and I used a lot of elbow grease. I was too afraid of using any chemicals. But, I am doing my leak test and you can't see the streaks. I am prob. just going to let it be.

well internet has been down for a few days. now is back up. nothing new yet...waiting for next paycheck. I drained all the tap water out of the tank, there were no leaks. I let it sit for a few days.
I am painting the back of the fish tank black tomorrow. Oh, and i am also going to sell the sump tank that came with the tank and i am making my own out of a 30 gallon tank that i have. I looked ALL OVER home depot and i can't find aquarium safe silicone sealant. any suggestions?

I believe most lfs carry that stuff...I have no LFS, so I buy 99% of everything I need online.....you should price it online too...believe it or not (even with shipping) a lot of times online is cheaper (+ you usually pay no tax online)

I like it so far. Great deal. I never get in on those types of deals.

Did you do the Fleck stone paint job on the stand? I had a 55 that was a fresh water tank back in '97' and I fleck stoned that stand. I did mine green.
You aren't going to find aquarium silicone at the depot. At least I never have. If you get the GE type I for windows and doors you will be good to go. There is another one made by DAP that I use that is also the window and door silicone. The DAP brand is in the BLUE tube. I can take a pic and post of the GE if you would like. I also have one of the DAP brand. Just let me know.
Looks good so far. Keep it up.

Thanks. It's going to be a slow process getting it completely set up. I want to take my time though. I dont really care too much for the fleck stone. But, it looks ok against the blue walls. i am probably going to keep it white. although green is my fav color. That would be great if you could post a pic of the silicone. thanks :)

This one is the GE. Sorry I didn't get the GE logo in the pic.

This one is the DAP brand. Sorry for my bathroom remodle in the background.

I looked at the MSDS sheets for the DAP brand. I looked at thier aquarium and this one(the window and door). They matched identical. Even the ingredients. I will also say, I have been told by SCSInet that the MSDS sheets only need to list the hazardous ingredients for humans. However, I still don't think they are two different materials. But, that is my opinion.
The GE type I is the one most everyone uses when they can't or don't want to pay for the "aquairum" silicone.
Hope this helps.
