LoL, rabies. that's pretty good, man.

Write down your eel's scientific name - call your doc and tell him you were bitten by a (common AND scientific name here) and you want to know if you should go to the hospital. Tell him the diameter of the gouge and how deep it went - if you can tell.
You should be fine - they might give u a couple stiches if it's deep enough and big enough around, and most likely they'll put you on anti-biotics for a week.
As for your eel - there's not much you can do but wait. I've heard of lots of people with eels who've escaped for hours at a time and the eels were fine. They've got a thick slime coat that protects them when they hit the air.
Make sure he's got good water, a place to hide and start playing the waiting game.
Good luck... keep us posted!!!

Rabies?? No. Stitches?? Maybe. Bandages and Neosporin?? Definitely.
My eel got out of the tank once and wound up on the floor. My dog loves watching the eel in the tank swim at night. When the eel found its way outside of the tank, he curled himself into a figure 8 and was that way probably most of the night.
The next morning at 5 AM when I got up, I found my black lab standing over the eel just staring at it with her famous "dumb@ss" (that is the dog's nickname for obvious reasons) look. :hilarious
I picked up the eel and threw it into the tank immediately and suffered no chunks out of my arms or fingers. He went under his favorite rock and stayed there for about a day and all was well.
I put nylon screening over the area he got out of (a space between the filter and cover) and he hasn't found his way out of his tank and towards my bed again.
Your lesson of the day - Eels are VERY strong creatures and can wiggle their way through just about anything! Use a towel next time you are forced to pick him up off the floor.

I wouldnt use a towel as that would pull off is slime coat. Just gotta be carefull. I know alot of divers are bitten by eels because they stick there hand in holes. Next time grab him like a snake with your hand behind his head to hold it out away from anything els to get bit.

Good point. My eel was dry and I was concerned with just getting him in the tank so I didn't think twice about getting bit.
I know of others who have had escaped eels and when they popped them in the tank they suffered no ill effects either. That snowflake I have has dealt with just about every problem one could imagine and he still refuses to die.

If he's a snowflake, he's going to be fine. Mine is a snowflake and I'm sure he was out of the tank for several hours.
I'm just lucky Dumb@ss didn't decide Eely was dog chow! :scared:

Kinda wierd how some things can go hours even in FW bettas can breath air and live in dry areas for hours on end. And some things like sponges cant be exposed to air at all.
