i wanted to slap the stupid guy that worked there!
he tried to sell me an anemone ok.
i told him i have 2 tanks 1 with a 14 watt lighting and a nano cube i think with 17 watt lighting. i told him this and he said that "u can keep one in either of those tanks with that kind of lighting, they don't need strong lighting at all. and they are also reef safe." this is exactly what he said. i was trying not to laf
and at the same time i was MAD

i feel so bad for beginners who come to him for help. and also half of his anemones where bleached. he said "thats how the colors should be."
he was a new guy that worked there so we argued a little. wow i was about to slap his brains out. i should have asked the expert guy that works there.

It is sad. The guy was new though. This is the trap that a lot of new hobbyists fall into. They don't know that the guy is just trying to make the sale

that was me the first time my tank was up...Tang, Trigger and eel are all fine to add to a tank(55) at the same time. you wont need a protein skimmer. luckily found this site and could sell my livestock

Eh, you can blame the store but not. They have to make sales but they can be responsible and inform their customers. It is the responsibility of the buyer to research what they are buying. Chain stores are the ones to be wary of the most. They hire anyone. I love stores that are not chain and the people that work there actually know what they are talking about. You still cannot trust everything they say. Not that they are trying to steer you wrong, sometime they just don't know. You must have noticed how many different opinions there are on certain subjects on here. People that have been in the game for a very long time often have a older view on things. As we all know, this hobby changes pretty quickly considering. Ten years ago all you would hear about is UG filters. They are outdated and known not to be the best anymore. Come to your own conclusions about things and listen to those that have had recent successes.

wow I am glad my LFS is much much much better! if they know the tank isnt set up for long enough and what not, they wont sell you something its not ready for. I bring them water samples to cehck and they tell me what stage I am at and what I am ready for. right now, he said I could add snail lol thats about it. he guessed that in a week or so i can add some zoa's and maybe some inverts.

i totally agree with you. people should research.
I agree with that, but I think most people who start this hobby, including myself, don't even know to research first.
The first thing they do is take the word of the LFS guy, then when it all goes wrong, then they think, "Maybe I can find something about this on-line" THEN you research.
I had never been on any kind of forum before I got my tank, so I took everything the guy at the LFS said as true.

Ordering LR from this sight, adding it straight to my DT, killing off my livestock within 24 hours, contacting SWF to cuss them out, them telling me to research here was how I found this board.

I got lucky and found a great LFS before I started researching. He wouldn't sell me any livestock until he tested my water and was sure the tank was fully cycled. He also told me to research. It's a shame that there are not more LFS's around like the one I mentioned. I guess I'm really lucky in that I have 3 great LFS within an hour driving distance from myself.
I actually be-friended on guy from this LFS and we hang out and play Xbox Live all the time.

When I first began in the hobby we had a privately owned lfs that was great, they asked what I had and had lots of info. about the stuff I wanted to buy, but then they closed, and my stomach began to hurt because I knew the only one left in my town was awful. They are a chain and have several tanks and all of the fish look sick, most are covered in ich and flatworms. When I asked once about the flatworms they just said that is the only way a store can do it.
I go in to get emergency supplies sometimes like salt and I can't stop myself from looking. Each time I feel like I could cry, I usually start talking to myself about trying to buy a tank to save them all. The manager cracks me up because he is baffled about why people come in and buy before he gets things into his tanks. See, they get orders in once a week and there is usually a line of people waiting to peek into the bags and just buy that way because they are scared of buying after they have been dipped into sick tanks. He doesn't seem to get that though. I have to drive 1-2 hours to shop in a store that is healthy and I still QT and bring fish and coral books to review at that store before I buy.
I think most stores are full of people that want to help but just know enough to be dangerous.

There are some anemones that need no light, tube anemones. What kind of anemone was it? Tim
Tube Anemones are not "true" Anemones...they are Ceriantharia's a completely different genus than true anemones which are, polypoid cnidarians.
Although they appear to look like anemones they are not. However as stated they are a nice alternative when your environment isnt up to par for a true anemone.

Whats even worse is when the so called shop expert lies to not make the new guy and the shop not look bad!

I too learned the hard way I used the same LFS for my freshwater tank and then decided to switch to saltwater. Hubby wanted salt for ever but we were thinking about moving out of state so the SW tank was on hold. When we finally decided to switch. We gave all over fish to our chinese food restraunt (sp) Went to the LFS and they sold us JEBO UV light, skimmer. lights boy was that a mistake.
I took my water in weekly then he told me to get damsels. (I know bad mistake)
Bought a few fish over a few months
Asked if s decerator crab was safe and he said YES, It took out my featherduster, polyps, scallops, shrooms when I went back he didnt even say sorry.
Went there the other day to "look" at fish planning on not buying anything and he tired to sell the hubby a electric damsel with half his tail chomped off for half price. I refused to talk to him. Figured if I seen something I liked I could research it then order it for SWF or my "good" LFS
As we leave they go what no fish today?

i would assume that most lfs employees are just that...employees. they wouldn't have part ownership, or profit sharing, etc. do most lfs pay their employees on commission?

That guy will more than likely get a raise and be promoted , I have found the more unqualified a person is the better they are treated!!! There is a great kid at my lFS, he is knowledgeable and polite to all customers and the owners talk s*&^ about him. Then they have a rude kid that knows NOTHING and he gets all the good hours and the owners don't want to hear any complaints about him
Not just in LFS i see that ALLOT!!!!!!!

i have to agree that lfss are usually completely uneducated, but i just realized that i shouldnt blame them when i get scammed into buying things. b/c if i get angry at the lfs for selling me something that i wouldnt have bought had i done research, then shouldnt i also agree with that women who sued mcdonalds b/c their coffee burnt her leg? now they have to say ""content may be hot" on all of their cups. when we start sympathizing with people (including myself) who do stupid things, we give the idea that being stupid is ok, its everyone elses that you make bad decisions.
