My monster "Shag"

ok I feel guilty even thinking this but I have a carpet in my reef that has been growing and growing for some time, its now becoming a monster. (about 24 inch across when open) it bullies everything near it and absolutley ownes a portion of the tank.
Can/should I "prune" it? Will it just completly die, or will it treat it like an injury and just grow over again? I have been thinking about this and I do have a friend with a larger tank that could continue to house it for future growth, but I have babied this thing for a few years and I would like to keep it. Just I feel aweful cutting him (wife named him "shag")
Anyone with experience dealing with an larger agressive carpet would be helpful :help:

If you cut them or tear them, I'm pretty sure they die. I've always wanted a carpet, but seems like everyone winds up in the same situation as you. Ever thought about making a species or carpet only tank, they look awesome in large cubes or walkaround tanks. Good luck

yes, I did think of giving him his own tank, but you know as well as I do that one tank leads to another, and another, and another.................
I am quite happy with the trials and tribulations of one tank dominating my waking thoughts for balancing this or that, or what would look good where.
I was just hoping that with all the experience flowing around here that someone would have some magic recipe or first hand success at performing the surgery safely.
thanks again
