Very nice tank.....Would have drilled it for CL though.....but there are other options out there for water movement....What are you planning for the tank

that tank really wouldnt be good for a ray since your going to have alot of rock in there AND rays need at least 6 feet of swimming room which means he really wouldnt be able to "roam" and "open" up...
but i must say thats an awesome looking tank!!!

Don't like the closed loop seen what happens first hand when a closed loop fails. Will be have 2 900gph pumps with possbily power heads if not enough flow. But I did see your set up in your garage you defentily know whats goin on. Nice set up

I was planning on not haveing a lot of live rock in the tank the sump should be enough for the eco system with the plan I have for it. Even a blue ring sting ray would be to big ya think. Would love to do one and have seen them in smaller tanks than this and are doing wonderful.
Just throwing ideas and looking for advice. Or comments

Closed Loops are safer than water returning from the sump, so whoever setup and did the CL did something wrong....It's a sealed system per say.....The water is self contained inside the piping and pump on the CL, so there must have been something done to make it not a true CL......

the cl was a home set up of a buds. He had his piping nicley hidden. Pump got plugged when something got in burned out the pump and the seal in the pump gave in . The really badd thing about his closed loop was it was bottom drilled. Lets stay at least 100 + gallons out of his tank when he was at work. The really bad thing is insurance only covered the repairs of the water damage and 1000 in livestock. As most reef keepers know a 1000 bucks is a fart in the wind. Now don't get me wrong they do work and work well. I have seen some great ones and some that scare me. They just aren't for me. with a sump you can only lose what the tank overflows. Feel better about that.
How far along is your tank what are your plans for it?

there are only a blue dot stingray a.k.a bluespotted ribbontail ray(taeniura lymma), which is impossible to keep in captivity for more than a year and should be left in the ocean for just that reason OR the bluspotted stingray(dasyatis kuhlii)whiihc is a great aquarium ray but impossible to find in the aquarium trade.
rays do well in small tanks but they dont thrive.. we as humans can live in a closet if well fed but it doesnt mean we would be happy , you def. can keep a smaller ray in a 180, but not a corner 180 since as i said it just doesnt give him enough room to swim around.....
HOWEVER you can get a baby ray and let him grow up in there and you might be able to get away with it as long as you would be willing to upgrade..i can imagine my two stingrays in your tanks just becasue they wouldnt have room to swim back andd fourth liek they love to do..and they also need ALOT of room to bury themselves...
im in no way saying you DEF. cant have a ray as stated you can do a baby yellow, or cortez or cali but in the future would need to upgrade...
i hope i somewhat helped and didnt sound lieke i was mean or trying ot turn you away from rays because they are VERY rewarding animals to keep!

Do you have a pic of those rays I would love a reason to upgrade again.

just search my name theres lots of pictures of my tanks, also you never want to put a ray in a reef environmetn( i tried) not good,, they are always getting scratched from corals which leads to infection, they always knock every coral over i dont care how good you have it secured they also tend to "lay" on corals which will kill the coral or sting the stingray which they really dont like!

You honestly can't blamed the CL for the problem.....Nothing should have gotten to the pump....Sounds odd that the pump burned up over approx an 8-10hr period....It's possible the pump had been clogged for a period with reduced flow and it finally closed up all the way causing the pump failure.

I agree with acrylic on this one. The closed loop I put into my 210 was nothing but beneficial for me. It provided a ton more flow, plus, there are no powerheads in the tank to cause it to look awkward and man-made.
I also agree with PSU with saying that it is not the right type of tank for a ray(s)
Sweet tank though!
