HI all,
I just started my tank 1/1/08. I have 14lbs of LR, 2 tank raised clowns, 1 peperment shrimp,1 watchman goby, 1 dec. crab(love him!) and 5 turbow snails. Tank is now geeting some brown alge on the live sand/coral, o yea about 24lbs of that also. I have a U.F.O comming out of a piece of my LR it is a small blue bubble with a white V on the top? looks like a eye looking out at me. I will try to get some pics here by 1/14 or so, I can't downlaod the pics, it keeps telling me the file is to big? can anyone help with that? Please give any advice oyu can and I will continue to try to downlaod this pics! thank you!

i'm a little confused you got the tank on 1-8-08? if so when and how did you cycle it that quickly .if you didnt cycle that would probably explain the brown on the sand .i am no swf specialist but it took me a month to cycle my tank and i cheated with my 12g by using the water from my water change on my 125g but the sand was new so it still went thru a cycle .im just wondering is it safe to set up and stock a 12g in 3 days?

ok, I had swf years ago and just got back into it, my lfs told me to use live aragonite coral for the substrate, He also told me that between that and the LR that I would not see the 'normal" cycle. If he was wrong you will read about me in the papers when I go back to see him!
I set it up on 1/1 not 1/8. I do remember brown alge from years ago, is that bad? I tested the water for the first time yesterday 1/13 and everything was ok all readings were 0.0 and ph was 8.4. Now I am worried, I schould not have listened to that guy but I have known him for months and he has been in the business for 25 years. I hope he didnt lie to me. Well I guess I will find out in time! I schould have come here first! Thanks for the info and please keep your fingers crossed for me!!!! what do you mean buy cured rock? are you talking about the live coral/sand "aragonit"? I know I spelled that wrong. I will keep you all posted

You'll have to resize the pics in order to be able to attach them. I forget the exact sizes, but I know it tells you what the limits are when you try to upload something.
Microsoft's Picture Manager is actually pretty good at doing this, if you have the Office Suite. I usually try to pick out only the area of the picture I need (crop), and then if its still too big, I'll resize down within the limits.
As far as the brown algae goes, its a 'phase' your tank will go through. However, if you aren't sure that it was 'cured' LR that you put in, I would be very concerned that you are going to see an ammonia&nitrite spike that could be very painful to your tank inhabitants.

the thing about the argonite is that it does have an experation date on the bag so allways check for that when you buy from a lfs,not only that but it sits on the shelf with no areation at all so it was pretty much stagnate water sitting in the bag of argonite so i just figure there has to be some kind of cycle for it.at work i am currently adding some sand to the argonite in a tank at work but i have it cycling in a bucket in the back so i can put it in the tank.

Thanks gmann, the rock was "cured" so hopfully I will not have a problem
Sue: I did check the date on the bag also, so again I think I may be alright.
I will continue to work on these picture's and again thank you all for the help and so far my little tank is happy and healthy. Continue to keep your fingers crossed for me!

Hi all,
I am back, this site is crazy sometimes! It would not let me log in for like 3 days so I had to change all my info and start over again! so my user name is a little differant. I am going to buy a new camera today so hope to have pic's later. I have added another 5.5lbs of lr and 6 blue legg crabs. So far soo good, I cant wait to add some coral! but I will! Anyone know how to stop all the "little stuff" floating around? I cleaned out the sponge in Chamber 3. I also installed that little plastic piece they call a skimmer, but what does it do? what schould I do to make it work? seems like its doing nothing

forgot to add, I had to get rid of the dec. crab. I was up late 1 nite and watching my little friends by the "moon" lites and caught him trying to eat my turbos!
sooo back he went to the lfs. I dont want any homicides in my tank! for those of you who dont know BEWARE of the dec. crab!!!

I use 'the comb' if I am seeing a film on the surface of the water. But it really only works if you have it oriented perfectly for the given height of water.
Basically you want the water to be restricted flowing through it, so it is pulling more off the surface. But it has to be low enough that the level of water in the back of the tank doesn't drop.
It will take some time to get it right, and after you do so, you will see reduced effectiveness, and take it out. Water changes are more effective at removing protein waste from the water than it will ever be.
I really only use it after I've kicked up a large amount of substrate to reduce surface film. After doing so for an hour of two, I take it out.
