i've never heard of this to be honest and have to dwarf lions, but if i were to guess i'd say they do it at night because they are nocturnal.

FWIW, according to Anthony Calfo, sloughing can be a "sign of extreme duress. Usually comprised of mucus, it is tripped by a virulent parasitic infection, or more often by severe changes in water quality (ammonia burn, acidosis from low pH, overmedication, etc"
However, it can simply be an activity that cleans its skin of minor parasites or similar.
Mine actually started sloughing when the water quality vastly improved (nitrates significantly lowered) and he started growing a bit faster. He is about 8" now. I see him do it about once a month or so.

actually the "shed" as you guys call it is called a cuticle. Lionfish and most sedentary predators cover themselves w/ a cuticle of mucus and proteins to prevent any settling organisms from establishing on them. Do recall these fish sit for long periods of time and can't afford to have stuff growing on them
Thats said, lionfish shed for many reasons. water quality, fish health, irrantats in the water, etc. IME, they do it infrequently, but its still normal. If your fish does it frequently, then there maybe concern

also many people are not aware of their lion shedding it's cuticle because the cuticle is quickly removed from the tank by filtration etc.
