My new nano progress thread

i am posting my new nano mods on this thread, and i will update and update photos as i go on with this project. As most of you know, i received a defective aquapod, so they replaced it, and allowed me to keep the old nano cube and just cut the power cords and send the cords back. so now i have 2 nanos... hehehe but so far here is my progress on this nano cube i have begun modding......
i would like to start my new nano progress thread. i am not to far into my project but as i do more thens to it i will post more photos....
ok here is my progression with my new nano.
1. the first thing i had to do was change out the crappy Azoo pump that came with the nano.

2. i replaced the azoo pump with a maxi jet 900 at 230 GPH

3. i replaced the duckbill output flow deflector, with a hydor flo rotating wavemaker device.

4. i placed my little nano skimmer (when i say little i mean little, it is only 6" inches tall) into the 2nd chamber of the sump/fuge area. in this step i also removed the black plastic backing that was covering the back so you would not be able to see the chambers from looking behind the tank. i removed the covering for the simple fact i will be putting cheato, live rock, and some live sand in a back chamber with a clip on light to make it a tiny fuge chamber.

here is the view from the looking behind the tank and u can see the different chambers

5. after that i decided i better leak test this sucker before i get much futher so i fulled the tank about 1/4 full with water and checked

6. after leaving the water in there for awhile i seen no leaks, i moved around the back of the tank, to make sure no water was seeping thru the silcone seal and into my sump/fuge chambers. so far so good....

7. so i filled up the tank alittle bit higher, since there is a vent in the back chamber wall that i covered with silcone so it would not put extra flow back into the sump/fuge chambers. so i filled it up to past the vents to check for leaks. as of right now this is where i am at in progress. i am still waiting to see if this starts leaking on me. but so far so good. all my chambers in back are still dry.

well lets move around to the back and see if my chambers are dry?

br />
HEY, imagine that still dry chambers... but i think i am going to let it sit overnight to make sure, plus i am getting alittle tired to be working on it. so i will continue more tomorrow....
since i am not too far into the project of mine, i still have nothing in my back chambers besides my maxi jet 900 and nano skimmer. i know i still need to put my heater, temp probe, pH probe into the back chambers. does anyone have any ideas how i should situate my back chambers?
how does this sound?
chamber 1 - chemi pure, purigen, temp probe, pH probe
chamber 2 - nano skimmer
chamber 3 - live rock rubble, cheato/fuge
chamber 4 - MJ 900 and heater
any other suggestions?

Damn..thats is freaken awesome. Looks good!! Geez...I modified my 24 gal nano with a custom made 150watt metal halides and it runs on a independent canister XP canister filter as well as its regular nano filter. I also added a thermoelectric chiller.
How did you take out the original plastic in the back to put in a see through glass one? That is awesome. Is yours a 24gal nano? I dont know what kind of lighting your putting on it...but if you are planning on putting on halides, definetly custom make it and use a thermoelectric chiller. They are inexpensive and works great.
Keep me updated ! Thanks.

no mine is not a 24g, its a 12g. as for seeing thru the back, it was simple it is actually only a black cellophane type cover glued over the glass to to hide the sump/fuge area of the tank. all i did was take a razor blade down each corner, and started peeling off the cellophane to expose the glass. then i took the razor blade and scraped off the excess glue that was sticking to the glass. As for my lighting i have not decided yet, i will be using a custom kit thru nano customs once they are available. it will probably be something along the lines of: 1x70W HQI MH/ and like 36W PC lighting for 106W total.. i am looking to get right around the 8 - 10 WPG range. and i will also be adding a ICA chiller into the hood.
Thanks for the compliments

Very awesome. I have a total of 150watt metal halides and 36watt blue actinic, for a total of 7.75ofwatts per gallon in my tank. I saw the hoods at nanocustoms..they are really really expensive, I think you should do it yourself instead of paying tons of money for that MOD for the 70watt metal halides. And I dont knwo if you live in california, but youc an buy the thermoelectric piece for around 20bucks at Frys Electronics and then the tube for another 4bucks and the a/c adapter for 12bucks. Instead of paying 89bucks or somethin at nanocustoms. Good luck.

DevilBoy,
I also just purchased an Aquapod 12 and am following your posts. I have not begun to set it up yet, but am pretty happy with it so far. I researched many of the nano tanks available and decided on this one, but there are still some things that I wish were different.
For instance, I am not sure why they designed it so the chambers do not go all the way down to the bottom. That would increase volume for a fuge or other devices (skimmer, heater). I also do not like the mechanics of the area underneath the chambers that is basically "stagnant". I understand there will be water movement of sorts, but if anything gets under there you cannot get it out...
I am considering dremeling the bottoms of the chambers out and then adding new pieces to "extend" the chamber walls to the floor as needed and also an extra one at the end of the flow for a bubble trap of sorts. The 24g chambers go to the bottom- I do not know why the 12's don't...
Keep postin'!

All the things you have listed in chamber one- I don't know what any of them are. Please explain. :notsure: I love the nozel thing you put on. I hate my duck bill one. Would I be able to replace mine, or is to late?

i have not done anything recently to modding my nano since funds are not allowing me at this time, but once i do start i will keep the thread updated....
50cal, i completely agree i dont like how the bottom of the chambers are 1/4 of the way up from the bottom of the tank.
Zoie,
The items in the chambers i mentioned are a temperature probe, which is the probe for the digital coralife thermometer. the pH probe, is an american marine pinpoint pH monitor. just stick the probe in the water and the monitor gives you a digital reading of the pH 24/7 so you dont have to constantly rely on testing pH. Purigen and ChemiPure are pretty much the same thing, they polish the water of nutrients, pretty much like carbon does. But i am going to go with the Chemipure over the purigen or the carbon, the chemipure can last up to 6 months before changing.
And no, it is not to late to add the hydor flo to replace that ugly duck bill nozzle. If you need more info on it let me know and i can send you to some sites that sell it. It is actually a wavemaker device it rotates 360 degrees....

I want one!! Let me know where you got it and what size or model so it will be the right one. Also- you say your thinking of putting your heater in the chamber with your pump. I don't understand how this is possible because there's barely enough water to cover the pump, and your heater has to be totally submersed. I want to hide my heater too.

i know about the low level in the last chamber with the pump. i had to tinker with it to finally get the levels i wanted. what are the water levels in your chambers? do you have a slight waterfall effect in chamber one going thru the surface skimmer?
drop me a email at iceedevil@hotmail and i will tell you where to get the hydor flos. they are really cheap. i got mine for 9.99 plus shipping.

Devilboy,Where did you get your MJ900 I can't seem to find one in stores. Did you get it on line?

Lookin good. If you plan on sps you may need more flow though. I found a MJ 900 inadequate in my 12g.
For the lighting, i would go with at least a 150w halide, it lights the tank up!

i actually have a MJ900 and i added a mini jet 606 also. so i have 2 outputs now with the hydor flos attached

With all that water flow how do your corals stay in place? How do you point your powerheads? Everything in my tanks seems to take a beating.
