I went to a L-ish FS and picked this little guy up. Hes a spotted puffer and hes brackish water. I love him, great personality. Hes currently eating krill cubes. Any feedback would be great.

sorry about the blurriness of the pics. Took them with my camera phone. I tried to sharpen them but I couldnt help the top one. I did do a number on the bottom though.

I don't think puffers are too tough to satisfy, I am sure he will eat any meaty things. Krill, is fine, but could run a bit pricey if he gets used to it too much. Mix it up, I am sure he will readily accept most foods.

Awesome little fish. Just keep him well fed and the water fairly brackish until he matures into an adult (where then he is fully salt).

Ha, love the rainbow gravel. I have a 38 freshwater in my son's room. He picked the rainbow gravel and blue plants. It reminds me of why I got started with this hobby when I was a kid myself. Great old school tank, and an awesome puffer

What kind do you have there? Some "brackish" puffers actually do better in mildly brackish water. Figure eights are an example. They live from 1.003-1.0012 ideally. That was from memory. I can look up the exact numbers if needed. What is the name of the puffer that you have? Just because some can be acclimated to salt, does NOT mean that they will do better in salt. Many brackish fish just spend a few months during breeding season in salty waters.

I've got one of these little guys in full salt atm, really loves eating BloodWorms more than anything. Tried putting a flouting thermometer/ hydrometer a week ago.. little guy wouldnt stop attacking the red in it. Now with these guys make sure to give em occasional med-small snails or crabs to grind their beak down so ot doesnt become over grown and end up with eating issues

How long have you had this fish in full salt?

arhg. i wouldnt feed krill if i were you. they wind up not eating anything else. i have 2 that ive had for about a year and are about 2.5in. (poofy and kiwi)
after about a month with the salinity at where it is now increase it .001 every week for until your at 1.023ish and youll see a dramatic difference in health, activity, color, and wellness of the fish ;) just be sure to clean the top of the gravel everyday cuz they poop like mad. and they shred the food before they eat it lol! so that and a weekly water change will keep it clean. ummM if theres anything else ill try 2 answer ;)
OO and and ya wat interex said give them snails :) untill theyre fullSW then the snails die and they wont eat them...then switch to good ol stinky frozen clams

What brackish fish do you have at this salt level? I have been reading a LOT about transferring brackish fish into full salt. You get the same results as putting fish into a year long hyposalinity. They can take it for awhile, but it isn't how they live. Organs start to shut down. Brackish fish do not live in full salt. They go out in the saltier waters, but they come back. They don't stay out there. Again, it depends on the animal in question. MOST, if not darn near all, "brackish" fish, just need their salt to be 1.004. They are good to go.

just my GSPs ...ive read up that they sometimes get lost at sea so they live the rest of their lives out there, and they tend to stay more near the outlets anyways. only returning to spawn. ive seen 10+y/o GSPs living in SW :)

He is t. nigroviridis. I read that they do best in waters with a salinity of 1.005? Would it do him some good to raise it every week? I dont want to put him into shock or have something bad happen to him with too much salt. Thanks for all your help.
Oh and for the rainbow gravel, thats all I had on hand lol. I was hoping to do mostly black gravel with a bit of iether baby blue, emerald green, or the rainbow mixed in with it. I think that looks spectacular in the tank, IMO of course.

One more thing. I tried to upload a video of him eating (again from my phone so not good quality), but it was too long to send. Ill try to get one up tonight if possible.

Puffers are cute little guys, make sure to feed him some snails, helps to keep their teeth in check. They are quite interesting to watch eat the snails too.
I had some puffers once and they are just so cute as their little fins propell them around the water and those puppy dog eye they have are so cute too.
My favorite is the saltwater porcupine puffer, looks like a sad puppy
Enjoy..

No I knew that lol. I meant I thought that they were brackish, how could they live in SW? Doesnt that have long term effects on them?

most brackish fish yes...GSPs no.
they actually do better but only when theyre more mature
most GSPs in the wild stay at the outlets or the coasts and only return to FW for spawning.
they are much more active and you can tell theyre more healthy, and colorfull once theyre at high range or full salt levels
