Hi there. I have been doing saltwater for about 13yrs now. I just got a new refugium set up. Tell me some suggestions. I have a softball size of chaetomorpha, red mangroves, maidens hair plant, green and red gracillaria, and fan plants. I have about 2 inches of sand. I want to add some more maybe some mud will this disturb anything if i add more. A lfs told me to put 30% sand and 70% mud has any tried this. Heres some pics of my set up.

Looks nice. what is in the section on the far left. This would be a good place to add some LR and/ or a filter(sock). That would help to keep the fuge looking nice and clean like today.

cool on the sock.
Are you planning on adding the skimmer into that section. If so it looks like the water level is to high, you will have to build a stand, hang it or mount it outside the section.

Hi there. The water level is covering about an inch of the pvc comming down how is the water too high if it was any lower the pvc wouldnt be submerged. About the mangroves they are barley buried only thier roots are buried and as long as the mangrove isnt submerged they are fine. They must have their tips out of the water correct? Thanks for your replys keep them commin.

as far as the first chambers water level goes: sometimes skimmers have a recommended depth at which they should be operated. you can just check what depth, and if the water in that chamber is too deep, then you can make a stand for your skimmer from pvc, acrylic, or eggcrate. no big deal, easy fix.

Really? I've read you can bury the mangrove roots in the substrate. If what you are saying is true, how is that possible? The refugium would have to contain only 1-2 inches of water.
