Well, the topic pretty much says it all.............I just got him from my LFS and the owner told me that he kept the wrasse in an open top tank for a month and he never tried to jump out...........
He was in a 20g tank there and I just put him into my 125g and within 5 hours the little bugger jumped right out..........I was in the room and heard a little thump so I immediatly ran to the tank and found him on the ground. He fell almost 5 feet. I got him back in within 15 seconds and he now seems to be doing fine.
My question is, do u think he learned his lesson or do u think he'll just do it again?

If you don't cover your tank, the next time something scares him...he'll do another swan dive to the floor....

and more than likely when your not home....they tend to have trouble breathing without water lol. my tiger goby did that...get egg crate or glass tops...like 20 bucks max

I think perhaps you should get Egg Crate on the top of your tank. It's a great covering, still allows plenty of gas exchange, and is cheaper than glass lids. You can find it in your local hardware store in the lighting diffuser section.

or you can always create a moat around your tank

but then he can jump out of the moat, so youd need a moat around a moat...
eggcrate
although i have heard about skinny jumpers actually jumping through the eggcrate, but if thats the case then he diserves to die

That is funny

My sixline continually jumps into my overflow towers, has done it like 5 or 6 times. I just leave him in there now, its been his home for about 2 months now, I'd probably go with some type of covering(Eggcrate).

it is never a question of if a wrasse will jump it is when..i learned the hard way when i first started to keep fairy and flashers...i tried eggcrate for some time but that is not full proof..the flashers and smaller fairys can get through that..it is better than nothing but i use a mesh top and it works better than eggcrate

Inevitably you will spook him and he will do it again. I had a wrasse jump out and land on the top side of my 250 MH bulb right in front of me as I was opening the lid. He then landed back in the water and swam behind the rock never to be seen again. Had a fairy and red coris dive out the back and another wrasse go over the overflow wall. Overflow is now covered but that is about all I can do. There is merit to my yellow goby who has never been more than 1 inch off the sand bed or 8 inches from his favorite perch.

Sixlines are jumpers. On the reverse end of this, I had a diamond goby that never once tried to jump in the qt or in the display. He was doing so well. He ate everything that I put into the tank and was not harrassed at all. He had tunnels under the rock and in the sand. I had a TINY gap in the back of the canopy. I found him stuck on the floor after work one day. No aggression, perfect water, no reason to jump, but he did. I still do not know why he jumped.

how come we never actually witness them jumping out?
i mean sure we can hear it and run to their rescue, but why dont they ever do it when we are actually looking?
