i think i finally got my sump plans to the way i like them. im starting on it later this week
once my dad (im 15) can take me to a few different stores to get supplies. im using a 20 gallon tank for the sump under my new stand i got for my 36 bowfront.
all the supplies i need: (anything im forgetting?)
-sump tank
-baffles (of plastic or acrylic???)
-pump (quiet ones pump or mag drive)
-pvc pipe (primer+cement) (what is reef safe primer and cement???)
-100% silicon
-4-6" DSB & Algae (for fuge)
-heater going in skimmer chamber
optional stuff:
-turboflotor blue skimmer
-chemi pure (between baffles) and sponge (in the intake chamber)
here are my plans: (tell me if they are good or if i need change to them please) (black X = chemi pure) (yellow Xs = eggcrate sponge)

well dont use the sponce or chemipure. all both of them will eventually do is trap crap that will rot in your system and release nitrates and phosphates. your return baffle is to low.... unless your going to have a reliable ATO system in place your going to have to put water into the sump every other hour to replace evap. it sucks, take it from me.

hi, would running just that carbon for a few days every month work. this way it wont build up nitrates and phosphates? and would you recommend to make the return baffle a few inches higher? all of my baffles except for that one are 13" and the sump is 16" high. i was thinking maybe making the return 10" high. what do ya think. thanks

running carbon for a couple days at a time will not hurt anything but you do not want detrus to build up in it. keep in mind that a ATO will help you with evaporation and making all the baffles so high could be a bad thing if for some reason the power went out all the water from the tank up to the level of the over flow will flow into the sump causing a wet mess.... just things to think about

do you know how to calc how much extra water will come in my sump during a power outage or is that just dependent on how i position the overflow box? my tank is 36 gallons and my sump is 20 gallons.

also, i can do an ATO but my DT has a glass canopy that covers 95% of the tank so i have very little evaporation. but my sump will be open-topped so that would cause more evaporation too. so an ATO might be necessary but i will see how it goes. what i dont understand is why the return baffle height has to do with evaporation issues/ ATO? unless i misread ur info wrong and im just being stupid lol.
