My Red Serpent Passed Away ??? NEED ANSWERS

OK i checked all my levels today and everything was ok but there were some traces of nitrate but nothing big. I did a decent water change today after but. Yesturday i bought some live rock for my 40 gallon to add some more. And my serpent lost part of his one arm which i thought nothing of i figured he felt threatined and detached part of it. But then later that night i noticed a white spot (sore) on his body and then slowly the tips of all his arms fell off. When i woke up he was dead.
Please any ideas about what could of happened to him? Thanks

Hey thanks for all the help...........
I bet if i did something wrong i would of gotten 24,000 responses sayin how dumb i am but. Do nothing wrong and get no response.

Very likely that LR caused a cycle in your tank. Inverts are very very sensitive to water conditions. Especially stars. Nitrates are very hard on inverts. Anything close to 20 needs to be taken care of. What are the exact parameters of the tank? Salinity may have caused this also.

My nitrate was right at 20 So i guess your right. I didn't think about the live rock causing a little cycle. But it was also time to do a water change as well. Im using a fluval so im thinking im gonna start doing a more frequent water changes. So between the two of those things i guess i doomed him
. But there is a happy ending. Today i woke up to check c list and found 40 lbs of lr free 1 sea serpent and a fire shrimp and some snails. After i got there and loaded everything up he started just throwing stuff at me for free lol. Chemicals food and such. He was so tired of al the stress of taking care of the tank. Anyway i checked over everything real good and decided it was safe to go in my tank. FREEBIE

Well on the plus side you did do something wrong by adding the LR and starting a cycle. So let the bashing begin

Well i still feel i did nothing wrong. It is a 45 gallon and only had about 20 lbs in it so. Either way it would be wrong to not add more and wrong to add more from what your saying lol. What is the best way to add lr to an already established tank?

You have to cycle it separately from the tank. You can get a large rubbermaid container and heater and powerhead and do 20% water changes once a week or you can take everything out of your tank and into a smaller qt tank and let it cure in your tank. It depends on what is easiest for you.
