In order to know I will need to know FAR more about the situation
What kind of star
How long have you had it
How did you acclimate it (if less than a month)
SPECIFIC WATER QUALITY PARAMETERS. THis is absolutely necessary...seastars are very sensitive to water parameters, especially pH, ammonia, specific gravity...also need alkalinity, nitrite, nitrate, temperature.
Age of tank
Other tank inhabitants
Amount of LR
If a chocolate chip or general- how much and how often do you feed it?
Seastars need to be in mature systems at least six months old. When dying, they tend to "melt" or disintegrate by losing parts of the arms. This commonly occurs after introduction to the system. Also, it can occur in about 6-12 months depending on the species and is due to starvation.
We really need much more information in order to help.
