My Tank Leaked Everywhere

So I got home tonight and my electricity had went out for I guess a little while and when the filter turned off, about 10 gallons of water were spilled onto my carpet. Luckily none of my fish seem to be harmed so far. I had to go buy more salt and make more water for them. I am so pissed. Stupid filter!!!

The filter is a Penn Plax cascade. I don't know if there is an anti-siphon hole. My roommate bought it, it's his tank. I just buy all the stuff that goes in it.

2 of my fish are missing now. My Trigger that I got 2 days ago and a little damsel that I have had for about 2 months. They might be hiding in the rocks but I suspect my anemone's ate them. I call the Haitian one Wyclef.

Just think positively.....it ws 10 gallons, not 35 gallons, like my tank leaked last year!

That sucks. I guess I didn't have it that bad.

How can a canister filter leak because the power went out? I have the same filter. This is a sealed filter system. If it leaks when the power was out it would leak when the power was on.

I believe what happens is the vacum/suction continues...which I have witnessed while cleaning and I have forgotten to remove the ends of my canister from the tank. Basically the vacum continues to pull water, but nothing is being pumped out of the sump back into the tank, tadahhhhhhhh! Lake city. That's why I gave up on my home made sump. I could never quite tweak the pumps to keep the water levels equal.

Two pump systems never work...
Overflow and single will if balanced...
But system still needs needs to be tweaked for power out/backwash...(anti siphon)
Canister filters are closed loop and should not drain if both ends are in the tank, any other configuration is incorrect usage and asking for trouble.

Well.....sump or no sump it's all a big mess in the end. I'm just glad that the occupants are okay.

possibly the retun was knocked out of position with the restarting of the filter? And sprayed the floor? Isn't cascade like fluval and eheim...cannister type filters...these should be closed loop and back siphoning would just go back into the cannister and not all over the floor?

My roommate had the cord stuck between the two halves of the filter so it didn't seal properly. That's all it was.
