MY TANK

Right now i have a 75 gal. tank with 100+ pounds of live rock. My tank has run for 5 weeks. I am setting up a reef tank. I was wondering if a UV sterilizer should be purchased? If so, what are some recommended brands and costs. And, will a purple tang and flame angel be happy with this kind of tank. If you have any recommendations please tell. Thanks-TJ

yeah but if the UV sterilizer is in the filter in its own cantaner how can it damage the protein skimmer and tubing? I have trickle filter with built in skimmer.

Um...a UV filter/sterilizer Damaging equipment, you have never had one of these have you. They are not normally recommended in reefs becuase the kill both good and bad things in the tank (like some of the coral foods). I have always used one, and from what I've seen in my 60/30/20 gal and my 300gal systems, they don't seem to anything but good things. I also belive that one of the good things it does, by killing alot of the food, is make alot of thing easier to feed, although I can't back this up, I found many of the basket stars seem to better in the tanks with the UV filters (selective feeders, and when all the food tastes the same, they seem to eat everything). In short, NO-one can out-rightly say they are bad, but I don't think any1 can say that they will kill corals or even put them at a disadvantage. So if you have the cash get one IMP, but if you are worried about the whole food thing, then only turn it on when you have a problem in the tank (just leave in in the plumbing), or you do as I do, and leave it on the whole time.

its your personal choice to use a U.V. (costs quit a bit) as long as you get healthy livestock you don't need to worry about it.
