Mycobacterium Marinum

Thought I should share this with my fellow aquarium lovers. I have been involved with saltwater aquariums off and on for over 20 years and this is a first for me. About 3 weeks ago I developed a strange rash on my arm. My bf who was in the navy for 10 years and then a commercial fisherman looked at it and said I had fish disease. YEAH RIGHT!!! I thought he was joking. It spread, itched liked mad, and got worse. Well, to make a long story short, HE WAS RIGHT!!!! I have myobacterium marinum. If you have an injury on your hands it can get into your system. Lives in the fish tanks, and you don't even know it. :scared: Cure? Antibiotics. Prevention? GLOVES. So please guys and gals, if you have any kind of open wound on your hands or arms, wear gloves when you are messing with the aquarium.

There is an artilce in a well-known online reef fishkeeping mag. Steve Pro, a member here, is the author. Perhaps you've seen the article? The pictures are not pleasant to say the least.
