Name that fish

I went into a FS couple months back & noticed a sand sifting fish that would scoop sand into its mouth. Do a bit of chomping on the sand & then dispense the sand back out its gills
Wasn't a goby, looked like a regular fish
Anyone have a name?

are you sure it was not a goby? there are many types that do this:
diamond goby - white with yellow diamonds
bullet goby (Sleeper Banded Bullet ) - long and grayish with colors resembling a LMB
golden sleeper goby - like the diamond but with blue and yellow on the face.
engineer goby - almost eel-like dark with white patterns.

I don't remeber the fish being a goby, I know what they look like.
You know, thay have that goofy looking face with a big frown
I remember, wondering what type of fish it was & I asked the person at the FS & they told me, but I can't remember.

If I recall correctly, looked like a regular fish, silver.

Jawfish of some kind...maybe Opistognathus aurifrons pearly white sliver looking, most common for home aquariums.

OK, just for the record
Went by the store to take a look, seems you guys are correct once again. Only had 3 fish in the frag tank, all of them gobys.
Golden head gody
diamond goby
dragon goby
So there you have it, you guys were right about it being a goby.
Which of the Gobys will be best for a 55g tank?
I like the 4 wheel drive goby, any info on them?

4 wheel drives are small guys, i dont think they munch on the sand.
be careful with the ones you mentioned. i think 55g should be ok to keep them alive, as they also eat prepared foods as well as the fauna in the sand. especially if you dont have something else competing with it, like a star fish. be careful of any corals you put near the sand as they may attempt to bury it. other than that, they are cool fish with good personality.

How about a Goatfish. Did it have 2 long backward facing barbels on the bottom of it's mouth?

edit...just saw you found out it's a goby...nevermind.

If you are looking for a sand-sifter, I would go with the orange spotted diamond goby

They're awesome little guys, but I highly recommend having a tight-fitting canopy, as they tend to be jumpers...

Hey GrouperGenius, I like the look of the goatfish. Are they sand-sifters, will they keep the top of the sand bed clean?
I'm looking for a sand-sifter that will not jump or rearrange the tank. Or deplete the sand.

The goatfish pictured gets to be a foot long. They are sand sifters. If you like the look of a goat fish and have a big tank (IMO 6') With a sand bed of atleast 2" then i would suggest the bicolor goat fish as it only maxes out at 6".
