The first thing that comes to mind is that you almost always need to mod them (i.e. remove a filter sponge, replace a pump, add a Hydor-Flo)
That and some models have been prone to cracking (mostly JBJ). As far as I know, few people use skimmers on Nanos, usually just a surface skimmer. A chiller only if it gets really warm where you live, and then there are some small ones that aren't too badly priced.

I only have experience with the aquapod (12gallon), but from my experience and what I've read, they are pretty good systems right out of the box. They can be made a bit better if you tweak them just a bit, but the tweaks are easy and cheap, so generally worth the time/money. Heat can be an issue if you get one that has an eclosed top/hood (as opposed to an open top w/ a halide). But even this is usually easy to correct.
Do so seaching in this forum about the specific systems as there has been a lot of talk lately about the pros/cons of each.
