Nano Size??

What is the largest size you would consider a nano tank??? Would my 25 gallon be considered one??

hmmmmmmm, good question
I believe most say 20 gallon
but nearly as many say 29 gallon
Me personally, I think anything small would be a nano. Even a 10,000 is a naano in comparison to a natural reef.
but for definition reasons, I will stay with the 29 or under UNLESS someone wants to show me otherwise, Where a 29 is NOT a nano reef.

I completely agree.
I think water volume
plays a huge part in the nano world, not just the tank size. The tank size just limits you to what you could have within the tank. But, that's just my opinion.
Take Care,

i don't run a sump, overflow or anything. Just live rock and a emperor power filter. DSB are awsome!

passe?? Hmm wonder if people have yoto tanks - you know a thimlbe with a grain of LS and a nick of live rock and a frag of a fragged mushroom ..... LOL
Ty - thanks for the info ...... looks like using math terms comparing a tank to the actual coral reef .... man it is to early to try to figure it out ....

LOL of course!

that would be cool to look at the water under a microscope. I think i might try it, but I don't think I would call it a tank. It needs filtration. So a grain of ls to fill out the nitrates and we are set.

i would say a 30 gallon tank would be about it on nano size, imho
sump or fuge size should not play that big a differnce in whether its considered a nano or not, unless of course you have a 100 gallon fuge on a 10 gallon tank or so.
may also consider calling anything under 10 gallons a mirco reef

so, what if you plumb a 1 gallon tank into your main system and house the tank on the 2nd floor. Is that a nano tank technically?

Hey James - Splitting Hair guy called and he wants his hair splitters back -- errrrr
Seriously though - I think a Nano is anything under 30 Including Sump and refugium
Anything 30+ is a mini reef .....
Not sure if micro would be the best word choice - anything smaller than 5 might be considered a pico reef - but that is getting really tiny!!!
So in Tangsfornuttin's example above - then - no - it would not be a nano .....
In checvytrcks example a 30 gallon with a 10 gallon sump/refugium would not be a nano .... it woudl be close ... but still no dice ....
I think that the idea of a nano is that you are running a tank with minimal water volume!

Personally I think 20 gallons and under are nano size, although I'm happy to see anything up to 30 in this forum...
Unless there is an unusually large sump/refugium on the tank, or it is connected to a central system, I'd still consider it a nano.
Really it doesn't matter... almost like asking "what size is a small reef tank in your opinion?"
tangsfornuttin good call on the Seinfeld reference... they're always welcome... remember George's response... "The jerk store called and they're running out of you!"
Incidentally my nano fish are named after Seinfeld, Jerry being the clown of course and George the Watchmen goby, always paranoid. Kramer is the sixline wrasse who steals everyone's food and continually repeats "Hey buddy... hey buddy... :D"
Okay man that got off topic...:D

Heres how i would classify it. 55 gallon and above reef. 30-55 Micro reef. 10-30 nano and anything less than 10 a Pico Reef
