this is my frist saltwater tank and need to ask a few quenstions my 1st is do i need i heater in the tank my lfs guy said no but i want do know what you all think.second i have a 50/50 light in the hood is that enough i would like to get a few plants and coral when i get my tank established and i want to make sure i have enough light of them.oh so you now its a 12g and all i have in it know is some cc and lr its been up for 3 weeks. thanks for your help :happyfish

You need a heater. Keep the temp around 80 degrees for most tropical fish. Also you need at least 5 watts per gallon of lighting for most corals. Power compacts, Very High Output, or Metal Halide would be the lighting options.

yeah you do need a heater.
there is a 96 watt PC out there made by coralife that is ~18 inches long. do some reseach that would be perfect for a 12g nano.

try and get a tronic 50 watt heater (have been using my tronic for seven years and never had a prob [knocks on wood])

is that the right size for a 12g i dont want to get one thats to big.

IMO you should get the smallest heater you can. Even the smallest heater will heat your tank and maintain the proper temperature. The reason you should get a small heater is if the heater happens to stick in the "on" position, you have a better chance of catching it before it's too late and your fish die from overheating. If you get a big heater, you have less time and if the heater sticks, depending on the size of the heater, your fish could be dead within an hour. I don't know what heater you need for a 12 gal preferably, but I recommend the smallest one you can find.
