NASCAR just lost some credibility

Guess some of the independent drivers are getting REAL desperate for funds. Bobby LaBonte is letting Texas Governor Rick Perry use his car as a running political ad for his re-election campaign. I'm actually surprised NASCAR would allow it. I know if I were driving in the Texas race, LaBonte wouldn't make one lap before I spun him out into the wall.

It's not the first time, I think it was a anti abortion group that sponsored one and one team offered sponsorship deals to both McCain and Obama in 08. I figure an Obama sponsored car wouldn't have made the green flag after running the redneck gauntlet on the warm up laps.

I guess I just don't see the problem with this. They've had both parties try and court them pretty heavily. And have had appearances by major players in both parties. Why not?
Obama spend 20 minutes talking about healthcare during the Superbowl coverage. It is a pretty decent forum for this, minus the fact you have to listen to a politician...

Absolutely. Both politics and Nascar are races after all.
Potential problem with your theory, however: What matters in Nascar is who turns left faster...

Yep but if you turn left long enough you'll eventually crash and burn

That's the ironic part about it being Rick Perry. That guy is so right, Labonte will crash in the first turn.

I don't necessarily have an issue with a politician promoting himself/herself on a car. But in this situation, the only time Perry is doing this is during the Texas race in Ft. Worth. I guess he figures he's going to have a closer race this year, and this little rolling ad will be seen by several thousand TEXAN voters. Considering how much TV ads cost these days, $225K is a bargain for getting ad space for potentially 4 - 5 hours. However, Bobby LaBonte sucks as a driver the last few years, so I doubt the car will get much TV time anyways.

dude, come on, Perry was a democrat until he teamed up with W... He isn't that right... He's said a few things to go further right due to the blowback from our president. But I don't buy it, as much as I'd really like too...

Perry not right? You've got to be kidding. This is the guy that believes so much in State's rights he'd seceed Texas from the Union if he could get away with it. Texas is ranked like 43rd in the nation in education of our kids, and he refused the Fed $500 million 'bailout' because he doesn't want any "handouts from the Federal Government". He was the catalyst behind the these Republican's getting elected to the Board who decided what content would be added to the Texas school textbooks. You know, the one's who omitted Thomas Jefferson from the history books. Led the way for implementing Bush's little "No Child Left Behind" edict in the form of our illustrious TAKS Tests, the most useless and wasteful testing system ever devised. If there's anyone in this state that could be labeled a Staunch Republican Ultra Conservative, it would be Perry.

Well except for the fact that the liberal kook ring leader Kennedy co-sponsored the No Child Left Behind bill. (I still haven't heard a good argument against the TAKS test, it befuddles me that I can't get a teacher to complain about a poorly written test. Instead they just gripe about having to teach it) You believe politicians too much. And he never said he'd support secession. All he was doing was pandering, and I think a good pander too. (politically speaking)
You still can't take away from the fact this guy was a registered democrat until he teamed up with bush...

Have you ever looked at a TAKS Test? I have. I went through so many copies of the tests when my daughters were in 3rd - 8th grade, it made my head spin. The Math tests didn't even cover the basic material. The Reading Tests were confusing, and even I had to second-guess a bunch of the answers. Many questions were subjective in nature. I used to write tests for a college course I taught years back, and I can attest that the idiots who formulate these questions they put on these TAKS tests don't have a clue.

Hang on, all I was saying in my pot stirring with teachers, I've yet to have one say the test is bad, it doesn't test what it should. All they do is complain that they can't do what they want in their class rooms. They can't even argue against the issue well. Personally it is the public school system, of course it has to be dumbed down... They just need to be glad I didn't write it, because then it would suck...

Even if Obama sponsored a car for the Chicagoland race, I would still have less problem with that, then the damn Extenze car...

If NASCAR survived the multiple lawsuits by ATT to allow them to keep their sponsorship of Burton's car in the Nextel/Sprint Cup series... And them allowing Crown Royal/Jim Beam, "devil companies"
into the sport, this isn't going to be much of an issue...

Looks like there is some redemption in this world. Texas race got rained out today, and will be run tomorow on Monday. There goes Gov. Rick's nationwide advertising, and even getting his message across to a full house at Texas Speedway. I could think of some better ways to spend $300K. Knowing Perry, he'll find a way to recoup his money at the taxpayers expense.
Sucks to be a paying fan though. I know a couple people from here that went up Friday so they could watch both the Nationwide on Saturday, and The Sprint Cup on Sunday. One of them couldn't miss work on Monday, so I know he's not too thrilled about paying for a two-night stay in a hotel, eating out for two days, gas to go up there and back, and I think around $250 for the two-day ticket to the races. Don't think NASCAR has any kind of ticket reimbursement that I know of.

Some independently owned tracks and all ISC (Intn'l. Speedway Corp.) offer insurance, "Event Ticket Protector." I purchased it the first few Homestead races I went to, but realized I could take Monday off if need be
. It's not just for rain though, for any unforeseen circumstance you miss the race, you can get a refund.
Though I agree, should be standard for all tracks, though I guess it helps keep the grandstands reasonably occupied for a Monday race.

I'm glad I didn't buy tickets. I was planning to. Then decided against it at the last minute. I understand why they don't refund tickets. After all they've all driven up there. The expenses have all been incurred. So no refunds on rainouts. It just sucks.
