Natural bio filter - Ratio of lbs:gal

Great Message Board. Been a silent observer for about 3 months.
I'll be setting up my SW tank again this fall. I tore it down 3 years ago due to a move and it has been in the basement.
Anyway, in my last configuration I did not use natural bio filtration(Live sand & rock). Though, it seems to now be the common place.
How many pounds of LR / LS will be needed to support 55 gal? Is there a true ratio?
Obviously, you can seed non-live sand/rocks with the addition of others. Providing all is seeded, how much is needed.

well for the lr the rule of thumb is 1.5 to 2 lb per gallon. As for live sand or sand you want a dsb of about 3 to 4" I hope this helps
