Freshwater experience will help a little on saltwater.
I am still learning on saltwater against all the advices from here. I have been running my tank for 3 yrs now with total of 6 water changes.
lost my colt coral (had it for over 2yrs) not so long ago and made my first 15gal change after 10 months.
So I would suggest you rather find what keeps your tank in better shape from this board and your own experience rather than from me who has stayed on my own style.
