It has bacteria needed to establish a LS bed; no, no creatures such as starfish, crabs, etc. These need to be purchased separately. They are called cleaning crews on this website.

Yes, its an excellent price for LS--compared to LFS's or anywhere I've seen on the net.

Natures Ocean is good stuff. Just add LR and you will be all set to go. The LR will add the little critters you are concerned about, Natures Ocean has the bacteria that can prevent a cycle if done right.

A detritivore kit is want you want to bring the sand to a live state. Not a clean up crew, and not the creatures drifting down from the rocks. These are completely seperate organisms. The sand you received is nice looking, and it will work well, but as you have noted, there is a serious lack of the micro and macro organisms needed in a functional "live sandbed". It is what I consider starter sand, and a detritivore kit is used to finish up the live part.

there should be detrivores in your LR that will seed the sand. A detrivore kit will speed up the functionality of the DSB but is not 100% necessary.

I added NO detrivore kit to my sand bed,,,And it seems to be full of life. And doing a hell of a job reducing nitrates. My tank went from off the scale,to 15ppm in a week...Now six months later it's still at 15....

I run a plenum system in my reef tank and didn't buy any detrivore kits.
I believe the detrivore(sand sifters) kits are more important in DSB setups to help prevent hydrogen sulfide pockets from building up in the long term. They are not needed for plenum systems.
My nitrates are 0-5ppm and I add a lot of food to my tank.

C Marlowe,
Is there a site that you can get the type of detrivore kit you mentioned?
