I remember having a reddy type of hair algae appear on one of my colonies of eagle eye zoanthids. i thought at first it was just a normal bit of algae and nothing to panick about. It started spreading and seemed to "cling" onto coral as the flow directed it to them. this stuff started spreading like wild fire. it came to the stage where it smothered coral and i lost whole colonies of zoanthids. I started pulling it off the rocks and corals but there was so much that even a small strand left on the coral in a week would grow so much it would smother it. none of my snails or tangs touched this stuff. in my sump the algae started growing on the calaurpa and i realised i had to do something about this or my whole tank would suffer. my nitrates run at below 5ppm and i have trace phosphates. i had no other pest algae in my tank other than this stuff...
heres what i did..i done a search online and found a site that showed a whole tank infested with this stuff! then it shows a later photo where there was no algae at all, she reconded that MEXICAN TURBO SNAILS ate the algae. At £5 a snail i thought i would get afew. At first i didnt see them eat the algae but the stuff was starting to dissapear..i bought more snails i now had about 15 of them,,the algae was dissapearing by day. my tank is now algae free and my colonies are recovering. if it was not for this snail then my £3000 state of the art system would have been purely rocks and red algae.
ADVICE- check every frag/rock you buy, never buy anything that has other things in the tank with red hairlike algae in it. if you get any then remove it and buy the mexican turbo snails, you can get em off ----. best £35 iv ever spent.
