Need advice about lighting

I have a 47 gallon bowtank. I do not have a canopy and have not been able to find one.
My first question is: Do I have to have a canopy to use high intensity lighting? Right now I just have the standard florescent lights.
I was encouraged to purchase an anemone and now I am concerned the lighting. I have been wanting to upgrade but am confused about what to buy with my tank. It is 36" across.
Can you advise? I would like to add corals later.

No, you do not need a canopy to run halide or T5 lights. These two are the only ones I'd run with anemones.
I'd go with a 6x39w T5 fixture minimum, with individual reflectors, or 2x175w metal halide.
Do you already have the anemone? If so,take it back until you get the right lights for it.
