Need advice on PVC overflow

My PVC overflow is working great and is silent with regard to the stand tube, but the water is rushing into the tube in the tank (set up to skim) so fast that it is creating a whirlpool. This sucks in a ton of air and makes a sucking sound.
I have tried adding a "T" and lengthening the pipes, but no luck.
Any fluid dynamic people out there.
The overflow is 3/4" PVC and has an 8 foot drop to the trap outside the tank.
Any ideas?
Thanks
i'll take a better picture tonight, this is the only one that I have.

Is the top of your pipe Durso style? The reason Durso style stand pipes were created was to get rid of the sucking noise. That little lip at the top is the noise reducer.
