Need help ASAP with 120 setup. DSB and skimmer boxes.

I have a 120 gal tank with two built in skimmer boxes in the back. My problem is that I am making it a deep sand bed and the sand covers the holes in the bottom. Anybody have a solution so that the sand does not plug the holes?

How about a fine-meshed screen or a sponge on the other side of the hole. Just my .02

It is my understanding that the holes (slots) can not be blocked. If something can be in front would cc work?
