Need help finding some nice bicycles

I'm trying to find some nice bikes for my wife and myself. I actually picked up a Mongoose and a RoadMaster from Walmart this weekend. They were like $99.00 and $59.00 so I thought I would give them a try. They are going back. I can't get the darn shifters to work right.
Now I'm looking for a multispeed bike, but not one that is a pain in the a$$ and I'm not going to ride it down the side of the Grand Canyon. I just plan on putting a child carrier on the back and riding around our neighborhood on the sidewalks so I don't need a TREK.
I guess I'm looking for something that is not overpriced and has some quality. Any suggestions to look at?
Thanks.

Actually Trek, schwinn, and Raleigh, make a lower grade mt. bike that is still good quality but not super expensive.
A lot of nicer bike stores will also carry good quality used Mt. bikes also.

I would recommend Giant. The prices aren't awful...and the bikes are REALLY nice. I have a Giant Hybrid that's full suspension...it's like riding on a soft couch! I love it. Their website is giantbicyles.com or giantcycles.com (can't remember), but I'd see if I could find a dealer in your area. They're more than you'd pay at Walmart, but well worth the $...and they're less expensive than Trek.
BTW, I had a Trek mountain bike, traded it for a Giant Mountain bike (almost the exact same bike, but $100 less), then decided I was more a "hybrid" person since I didn't do any intense riding--just tooling around the city and on some light trails. A hybrid would probably be perfect for a child carrier.
Too bad you don't live in Madison, WI...we have a bike shop here that prices the bikes super affordably (because the owner is a "true believer" in the joy of bike riding!). Heck, maybe he'd ship. His name is Roger Charley (nicest guy ever) and he owns Budget Bikes, if you want to call him.

we bothe have the Raleighs and love them. Not very expensive either.
How old is your child? We switched from the seat that attached to the actual bike to the trailer type. We love that. Now both
kids are riding their own and we till use the trailer for our "stuff".
I know we didn't spend a bunch of money on the the Raleighs because we both needed new bikes. Afer 2 years they are still great.

Thanks for the input. I visited a bike shop today and checked out a few nice models. I liked one made by Motobecane. It was around $279.00 and had some nice features. In my price range at least. I'm going to check out some giants and cannondales this weekend.

Gary fisher has some good bikes for "normal use", but my all time fav is jamis. Awsome bikes and great bang for buck value.
