i'm a relatively new tank owner (salt water, that is) and i've been reading these posts for several days now. I must say i've learned ALOT!!! i find this to be a very informative site. However,.......(and i say the following at the risk of sounding naive)......my tank seems to be operating just fine without following all the rules and guidelines of LFT's or experienced owners. Granted, it's only been running for a month now and it's very small..29 gallons...but i seem to have "broken" some of the "rules" and am not any worse for it.
But to address your question nanoreef......10 gallons seems extremely small for a saltwater tank...everything i've read or heard suggests that my 29 gallon is a minimum and that 55 gallon is the best for a newbie. I have a hard time believing that you'd need a protein skimmer for a 10 gallon tank....i think the pet store is just trying to get some extra money from you. but then again i don't have live rocks yet in my tank.
Bottom line is this....don't buy something just because someone suggests it or says you have to have it. Don't fix your tank if it ain't broke. If your fish seem happy and there are no sudden radical changes then i'd just leave it be....but as with anything....vigilance is key.

slow down ... and let your tank run for at least another week... there is no reason to do anything right now
no skimmer needed
no plants
no water changes.. just wait ...

you dont need a DSB that would bee about 3" of sand... 1-2 lbs per gallon should not get you 3"
what would you say is the height of your sandbed now... ?

1.5 inches sand bed
i got a water test and my anmonia levels dropped
my lfs guy told me to do a 20 % water change because the cycle was through
and add a skimmer for the reasons
i can keep more fish
i can keep more Coral
the water is more clear because the skimmer has a sirface skimmer
Better Water Quality
if i do all of this then i want to
add a clean up crew and a fish is this okay

a skimmer will not make it okay to add more than 3 fish MAX
what are your ammonia levels exactly
and what skimmer is your LFS guy talking about

Please be clear, is it your nitrite or nitrate that is high? High nitrite indicates your cycle is not quite complete. Ammonia 0, nitrite 0, nitrate high and it would be time to do a big water change and get your cleanup crew.
Is this nano tank your only tank? I think I'd skip the skimmer and use water from a very stable source, like a larger aquarium, or premixed water from the LFS.

not to be blunt but so many people are just ignoring what people on here say lately its getting frustrating. you dont need a skimmer in a 10 gallon its NITRITE not nitrait, and until your nitrites are 0 that is ZERO, your cycle isnt over, you dont need to add anything to your tank, no fish, no corals, no skimmer nothing.
tell him you dont want his skimmer, aside from the fact that you dont need it, you could get it for 1/2 the price online

its hard for some people to sit here and watch first timers come in not knowing much about saltwater tanks... a lot of the time it just doesn't get through and they end up killing there tank off. i've seen it a lot on this site...
for gfk i understand how you feel ... it gets frustrating a lot of the time. there are somethings that bug some people and thats expected. everyone is not gonna mesh on a site like this one. but it's important to try and help out these 1st timers so they dont make the same mistakes over and over ....
for nanoreef you say you have had a saltwater tank before?
also try and read a lot of the past threads... if you do a search on the forum you can find any topic you might be wondering about . give that a shot and if you still can't find what your looking for just go ahead and ask...
