Need Help with Filtration

I have a 125 FO tank with sand and rock. Every since this tank was set up I've noticed a lot of floating debris always flowing through the tank. this tank was a display in a LFS.This can't be a good thing. I've tried placing filter media around the sponge filter in the overflow, filter media around the bottom of the sump, as well as, extra media in the outflow box of the sump. But I still have a lot amount of debris floating around. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

What type of sump filtration are you running?

Did you try placing your filter media/material where the water enters your sump?

I've placed the filter media in the outside overflow (by sponge) I also have filter media in the sump where the water flows down into. It then overflows to the trickle filter with media there and then it goes down through bio balls and some rock before going into the last chamber to be pumped back into the tank. There is also filter media in there now. Trying everything I can think of to remove as much as possible. Can you place a canister filter inside the sump somehow?
