I need help!!!!! I have just aquired a 50 gallon salt water tank that contains an eel. I have been warned that he will kill and eat anything that I put into his tank other than a star fish. I know nothing about starfish...is there a specific one that I should purchase?? Or should I not bother at all with trying to put anything else in??

What type of eel is it. Most eels will get along with anything that they cant swallow. Lionfish, puffers, tangs, big clownfish and pretty much anything they cant swallow you can put in your tank. How is the tank set up? does it have live rock or a deep sand bed? If you dont know what type of eel it is can you describe how it looks? Who told you that it would eat anything besides a starfish? For a tank your size a lion fish, a clownfish and possibly a tang like the yellow tang would be great.

I do not know what kind of eel it is. The person who told me not to put anything else in with it was the previos owner. He told me that he had 2 lion fish and a few other in there at one time and the eel ate all of them. The eel is about 20 inches long, no more than an inch in diameter so not very large. The tank it self is pretty much empty. I know that he set it up with live sand and a few rocks but nothing else yet.

No..the tank and eel were given to me by a friend here in Oregon. He had the eel for nearly 9 years now and wanted to get some fish again. He knew he couldnt put anything else in there from past experince so he just bought a new tank and passed this one to me.

No problem...
This is the first salt water tank I have owned and I just wasnt sure what I should do. I would love to add something else to the tank but dont want to waste the money just for the eel to have a snack.

I am surprised an eel would eat a lionfish seeing how lionfish are poisonus and the eel would have died most probably. I would take the eel back to the fish store i think just an eel in a tank is boring.

I cant say that I know how he managed it but I know that he ate a lion fish and a puffer. The eel did get very sick after and almost died but the thing is still swimmin. I didnt get him from a store he was given to me and I wouldnt get rid of him anyway cause I think that an eel in a tank is cool. I just wish that I could get something else in there that doesnt turn into a midnight snack.

best thing would be to try and find out what kind of eel it is. most eels are in the moray family. with it being 9 years old its at its full size so that could help u narrow it down to the type. since a lot of eels can get several feet in length. here is a eel id page most have pics and if you find out the kind then do a further search. maby this way you can find someting to put in with it and proper care for it
