Can any help me with an ID of the following polyps? Also, the "brown" ones of the left...are they dying? dead? fine?

what type of lighting do you have. it looks like a large tank, and usually extended stalks means they need more.

I only have the standard all-glass hoods with 10K bulbs installed. I realize I need upgraded lighting in the event I was planning a reef but I was just going to stick with polpys which usually dont require much light...? Also, they were placed about mid tank for their first 2 weeks...but I noticed the elongated stalks as well so I recently moved them farther towards the top.

If you are talking about a standard AGA hood that is only about 20watts, then your polyps will probably survive but not thrive, grow or show there best brightest coloration. When it is stated that they dont need much light it generally means they can be kept under compact flouresent(power compact) fixtures. With about 2-3 watts per gallon. Most soft corals can be kept and grown with this light and some long polyped stoney also like frogspawn and bubble coral.
Power compacts are a bit pricey but much cheaper than metal halides or T5 fixtures.

55 gallons...I dont plan on getting any other coral so I dont believe the lights would be a smart investment at this time. More live rock is my first concern.

I like the small peice of rock shooting up in the middle, covered in whamin watermelons. looks like a scene from Dr Suess.
