i think it somewhat depends on your fish selection.....
There are 2 major ideas that I have tried, one is to make like a wall, the other is to make piles. Both look nice, just depends on what you have and what you like.
If you have fish that will like to hover around the sand then you might want to make large piles so that they can have more room to swim around the bottom. This also opens up the tank for more swimming room for fish who swim a lot.
If I were you I would look at a bunch of pictures in the photography forum and see what you like. Ultimately this is one of the decisions you get to make on your own, just do it so you like it.

i drilled holes through mine and made rock towers. it worked great. i used acrylic rods(in the pic you see wood, but i since removed it), then placed them together.
once they were in the tank, i pushed them together and it made a nice habitat, that hardly had any "stale" areas.

heres what it started out as-

and here is what it is now-

no, not hard at all. just mix some portland cement with some sand, and add lots of rock salt to make it pourus. oh, and add some water. lol
its very easy once you get the hang of it. i thought it was really easy, until some of these workers stole my cement and sand!!! ohhh...that pissed me off since i was a day away from making maybe 100 pounds....
