Not the best filter for a saltwater tank,,but in a pinch it will work...I believe that it pumps 300gph.So it would be ok in a 40gallon tank.But marginal in anything much larger than that...

If you go FOWLR you are going to have more fish waste, which means more ammonia which means that filter probably wont keep up with that either unless you buy a skimmer to help keep it in check.

As I said,This filter will probably be OK.But only as a mechanical filter..You should also have a deep "live"sand bed and as much live rock as you can afford...About 25-30lbs of rock,and at least 20lbs of sand would do a good job for the biological filteration in a 30 gallon fish only tank...
