I have 200 gallon mix of instant ocean.. How much do you put in per gallon(doesn't say)? And I have set up my tank, and have the salt and powrheads and fluval 404 running- can I just add in the salt to the tank? Thanks for the replies

Instant Ocean is 1/2 cup per gallon. Since there is nothing in the tank I would think you could add it to the water in the tank and let the powerheads mix it.:)

just be careful if you let the PH do the mixing sometimes IO clumos together. before add the salt let the water get room temo and it helps the problem. I have only had it happen once but it was a pain had little salt sheets floating in the tank.
Mike
but yeah its 1/2 per gallon if I remember right.

thanks for the fast replies- I forgot to say that the sand and a dead coral and dead barnicle are in the tank- but no live animals.. Does this make a differance? Tonight when I get back from work I will add a little salt at a time.. I didn't know you add THAt much salt, seems like a lot.. I also read that I should wait to start my prizm skimmer until the salt is dissolved..

as for the skimmer i think that when you are starting a tank you should not use it for a little while. it takes out some of the good that you are trying to put in. i think i remember that right??... i think this is right some one else might know better. as for the dead stuff that should not hurt any thing.
you will get to know how much to put in after a while by doing the water changes. i remeber when i started i thought that i was putting in too much salt also. just keep using the hydrometer(spelling) and it will be OK... have fun

is the tank already set up and your wanting to raise the salinity of it or is it a new tank with FW in it>?
if you are wanting to raise the salinity of it then mix it in a bucket or something.
if the sand is already in the tank the mix the SW away from it and gradually add it to help keep down the sand storm that will occur when you add the water to the tank.
as far as the skimmer wait till 4-6 month mark a new tank doesnt have the nutrients and grude in the water that the skimmer pulls out it wil take some time for them to build up.

I would take most of the water out and mix in buckets and then add this way you dont get a bunch of salt mix on the sand that didnt get mixed into the water and it wont cause as much of a dust cloud then mixing it in the tank.the salt can clump together and not disolve all the way.
if the tank doesnt have a substrate yet then just put it in and mix it up realy good then add the substrate to the tank.
after it gets to the right temp then check for salinity. it will be white and hazey when you mix it up though the salt will talk some time to completely disolve.

yeah, I just realised that the salt just went down onto my sand.. I guess I will have to find a different way to do it- this brings me to another question, Can I use my vacume tube I use for my freshwater tank even though inside of it it is black?
